What & Why?Why internationals? Why storytelling?
It is the human condition to long for a home. Yet international students who find themselves at Cal Poly are far from their physical homes. They come to a new country without their families' safety, belonging, and security, the common characteristics of home (Lawson, 2018). Research shows that storytelling offers opportunities to foster a sense of self in the storyteller (Andenoro et al., 2012), along with empathy in the listener (Polkinghorne, 2013). Together, these are the perfect ingredients for belonging. International students need to have places to tell their stories in order for Cal Poly to feel like home. |
Intentions & Implications
This project aims to give voice to some of the experiences of three international students at Cal Poly. Their names and stories have been revealed with consent. I ask that you consider some ways to respectfully engage with the individuals and their stories. I will join you in doing the same.
